Netscape Messenger 4.5+
This document will help you configure your Netscape Communicator (versions 4.5 or greater) to check your e-mail.

Step 1
Open Netscape Messenger.  This can be done by opening your Start Menu, pointing to Programs, pointing to the Netscape Communicator folder, and selecting Netscape Messenger.

Step 2
From the Edit menu, select Preferences.

Step 3
On the Preferences dialog that comes up, go to the Identity category as shown in Figure 1 below.

  • Fill in Your Name as you'd like it to appear on messages you send out.
  • Also, enter in your E-Mail address.  This should be in the format "username@domainname.com" as shown below.
  • The remainder of the information is optional and does not need to be entered.

Step 4
Now, go to the Servers category (shown in figure 2 below). Fill in the following information:

  • Outgoing mail (SMTP) server - enter in your domain name
  • Outgoing mail server user name - put your username here.

Step 5
In the area on this screen where you see Incoming Mail Servers, it should be blank if you have never configured this program to pick up e-mail.

  • If you don't see "your domain name" in there, but there is something else, you should select that server and delete it.  You can do this by clicking on the server name(s) shown, and then selecting the Delete button.

Step 6

Now we need to add our server name to the program.  Click the Add button to add a server to the list.  A dialog box will pop up.  It looks like this:

Incoming mail server properties

Please make sure the following information is in place:

  • Server Name:  This is your domain name.
  • Server Type:  For your incoming e-mail, this is a POP3 server.  It's the most widely-used Internet standard for delivering e-mail.
  • User Name:  Please put the username you use to identify yourself with our service.  This is the same one you use to log on.

If you like, you can tell Netscape to remember your password.  By doing this, Netscape won't need to prompt you for a password to download your messages from the server.  This way, when you open Messenger, it will download your new messages without requiring any steps to be taken by you.  Most people set it this way, but it's a choice you have.

Once you've entered in this information, click OK to return to the normal Preferences dialog box.

Step 7
Click OK to save your information and finish setting up your mail account.

Congratulations!  You have successfully completed setting up your e-mail to work in Netscape Messenger 4.5.

Helpful Pointers for using Netscape Mail:

  • By default, Netscape Communicator will open to the Navigator browser.  To go into Netscape Mail to check, read, and write mail, simply select Messenger Inbox from the Communicator menu.
  • Netscape Messenger automatically checks for new messages periodically while the program is open and you are connected to our service.  If at any given time you want to force the software to check for messages immediately, simply click the Get Mail button from the mail window.
